When you write articles in WordPress you’ll most likely need to link to an external article or site.
WordPress allows you make links via its rich text editor. By default those links open in the same browser window regardless if the links are pointing to an article on the same site or to an external site.

There are several schools of though. Some recommend always opening links in the same browser window/tab and others recommend opening those links in a new tab/window.

If the link is pointing to an article on the site it makes sense for the links to open in the same browser window. Opening external links in the same window will make you loose the visitor because he/she most likely won’t be clicking the back button.

Option #2: How to Open External Links in a New Tab/Window in WordPress with External Links Plugin

Note: This is a better solution because it can globally apply through out your site.

First, search for External Links plugins within WordPress

wp-external-links-plugin-1

Configure the plugin.

wp-external-links-plugin-2

Now all your external links will open in a new tab/window.
